John E. Nomes, 98, of Silver Creek, NY passed away peacefully on Tuesday morning, January 21, 2025. He was born on February 22, 1926 in Blue Island, Ill., the son of the late Jacob and Gertrude (nee Van Rossen) Nomes.
John was a graduate of Thornton Township High School, “Class of 1944” in Harvey, Ill. He continued his education at the American Seminary of the Bible in Brooklyn, NY. While at the Seminary, John met the love of his life, Olive Newton, whom he married on June 9, 1951 and she preceded him in death on June 21, 2010. After their marriage they lived in Hamburg, NY. John served as the Assistant Pastor of the First Baptist Church of Hamburg. John and Olive were in charge of the Youth Ministry. John relocated to the Steamburg, NY where he pastored the Steamburg Community Church and then the Conewango Baptist Church and the New Albion Community Church. John filled in at several local churches when they needed a pastor. He also conducted interdenominational services at St. Columban’s on the Lake Retirement Home.
He is survived by his son, Paul J. (Judy) Nomes of Frewsburg, NY; a daughter, Carol (Skip) Wojciechowski; a sister, Joanne Freeman of Evanston, Ill.; also survived by seven grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, five great-great grandchildren and one great-great-great grandchild.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 22, 2025 at St. Columban’s on the Lake Retirement Home, 2546 Lake Ave. Silver Creek, NY at 1 PM. Memorial contributions in John’s memory may be made to St. Columban’s.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Hole-Parker Funeral Chapel, 160 Central Ave. Silver Creek, NY.
