Obituary of Carmen R. Contino

Carmen R. Contino,92, of Silver Creek, NY passed away Wednesday afternoon December 20,2017 after a long extended illness at the Chautauqua Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Dunkirk, NY. He was born on April 25, 1925 in Buffalo, NY, the son of the late James and Concetta (Rizzo) Contino. Carmen was a graduate of Grover Cleveland High School “Class of 1943”. A World War II veteran, Carmen served in the 290th Field Artillery Battalion. He was the recipient of several service medals including: American Service, WWII Victory, Europe-Africa-Middle East Theater Campaign, and the Good Conduct Medal. He was the former co-owner of the Oak Hill Diner and Frank and Carm’s Sporting Goods Store in Silver Creek. Carmen worked in the insurance industry for many years, retiring from Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. in Dunkirk, NY as the agency manager. His memberships included Our Lady of Mt. Carmel R.C. Church., where he was active in the Knights of Columbus and the Social Club, Silver Creek Samuel Cimino VFW Post 6472, lifelong member of the Fredonia Beaver Club, and former member of the Tri- County Country Club. Carmen enjoyed golfing, playing cards and dancing with Frances. His family fondly referred to him as “Mr. Gadget” because he was always fixing things and he was the Contino social director. He is survived by his loving wife of 69 years Frances C. (Oliver) Contino, three sons, James (Mary Jo)Contino , and Joseph (Sandra) Contino both of Amherst, NY, Jeffrey (Faye) Contino of Forestville, NY, a daughter, Janet ( Mark) Kinney of Sheridan, NY, nine grandchildren, Ann Kinney, Kelly (Marty) Schaefer, Nicholas, Stephen(Carly),Matthew, Michael, Andrew, and Alexandra Contino, two great twin grandchildren, Reese and Avery Schaefer, also survived by several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by three brothers, James, Joseph, and Frank Rizzo, and a sister, Susan Mateczan. There will be no public visitation, a Memorial Mass will be held on Wednesday, December 27, 2017 at Our Lady of Mt Carmel R.C. Church, 165 Central Ave. Silver Creek, NY at 10A.M. The family suggests memorial contributions in Carmen’s memory to the Silver Creek Emergency Squad 162 Central Ave. Silver Creek, NY 14136 or Hospice Chautauqua Co. 20 W.
