Obituary of Estelle M. Crino

Estelle M. Crino, 84, of Pinewoods Cottage B&B, Silver Creek, NY died Friday morning at the TLC/HN Nursing Facility in Irving, NY after a short illness. She was born and raised in Clifton, NJ, the daughter of the late Eugene and Ethel (Murphy) Wade on March 30, 1932. Estelle was an active child who loved to sing, dance, play the piano, act, write poetry and stories, draw pictures, paint , study and laugh a lot. She graduated from St. Bonaventure High School in Paterson, NJ. At age 18, she entered the Allegany Franciscan Sisters in Allegany, NY and began a journey teaching in Ybor City, Tampa, and St. Petersburg, Fla.; Everett, Ma.; Buffalo, Rochester, Broad Channel, Long Island, the Bronx, NY and Pompton Lakes, NJ for 19yrs. During that time, she taught classes in Art Appreciation, Art Content and Method to teachers in High School and College. In 1969, taking a leave of absence from the Franciscan Community, Estelle began teaching in an inner city school in Buffalo, NY. Having met her husband to be early in 1972 Estelle returned to Silver Creek. She married Benjamin Crino on July 15, 1972 in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church. She served as the Elementary Principal in the Gowanda Central School District for 14yrs.She retired from a 45yr career in education in 1993.Estelle served as Director of Religious Education at Our Lady of Mt Carmel for 5yrs until she started a new chapter in her life. After planning, designing, and building Pinewoods Cottage in 1995, a Bed and Breakfast business was begun in 1997.Estelle took a parcel of land overgrown with trees and carved a peaceful, serene retreat with lush landscaping for all to enjoy. Estelle holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from St. Bonaventure University, a Master’s degree from Suny College at Buffalo,NY, a Doctor of Education in Curriculum Development and Planning from the University of Buffalo. Estelle’s motto was , “Learning is a life-long process”. Her memberships were numerous, a former member of the Board of Visitors of J. N. Adam Developmental Center appointed by the Governor Mario Cuomo, Silver Creek/ Irving Chamber of Commerce, Better Business Bureau to name a few. She is also a published author of “Before and After, The Antics of Three Franciscan Sister’s “and “ Who Lives in the Little Pink House, a Children’s book with a lesson for all ages. A traveler at heart, her experiences took her to Mexico, Jamaica, BWI, Hawaii, France, Spain, Italy, Belize ,and Alaska.In2011, Estelle established a Scholarship for Promising Women Leaders through the Foundation at Fredonia University, College of Education. She wished to encourage more students and teachers to pursue careers in Educational Administration. Estelle has been a member Our Lady of Mt Carmel in Silver Creek for many years, serving as a Eucharistic minister and Lector, also participating in the Social Club. In her lifetime, she received many well-earned accolades. First Prize from the Guild of allied Artists in Buffalo for an acrylic painting titled “ Life Within”, recognized as the 2012 Woman in Business by the Lakeshore Chapter of the New York State Woman to name a few achievements. She is survived by a sister, Jean (Albert) DeBoer of Haymarket, Va., several nephews, nieces, cousins, and many dear friends. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband Benjamin W. Crino (1984), a sister, Ethel Wade, and four infant brothers. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial which will be celebrated on Wednesday, February 1, 2017 at 10 o’clock in Our Lady of Mt Carmel R.C. Church, Silver Creek. Calling hours will be Tuesday, 2-4&6-8p.m. at the Hole-Parker Funeral Chapel, 160 Central Ave. Silver Creek, NY. Burial will be in Mt Carmel Cemetery.
