Josephine R. Matney, 95 , of Silver Creek, NY, died Saturday evening, Oct. 15,2016 at the Chautauqua County Nursing and Rehab Center in Dunkirk, NY.
She was born on October 31, 1920 in Silver Creek, NY, the daughter of the late Frank and Josephine (Ortolano) Porpiglia.
Josephine grew up and attended school in Silver Creek. Everyone in her family worked hard. They labored together on the farms throughout the area and later she took a variety of jobs. She worked at the ammunitions plant, Silver Creek Precision. She also worked at Van Raalte, Patton Electric and Lodico’s Park Pharmacy. She always worked, she couldn’t sit still.
Her love of children was apparent in her words and actions. Josephine’s eyes sparkled when she talked of the programs and activities she shared everyday with a multi-age classroom at Silver Creek Central School. A member of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP).She volunteered for many years at the elementary school. As a young child she dreamed of one day being a teacher.
Josephine was a lifelong member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel R.C. Church. She served as a eucharistic minister and enjoyed playing bingo on Sunday’s. She baked pies, cookies, and special holiday treats to be shared at family gatherings. She liked to tend to her flowers and vegetables in her garden during the warmer weather. In her spare time she did needle work , made ornaments for the family Christmas tree and enjoyed reading. Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren.
She married William Matney on February 11,1950 at Our Lady Of Mt. Carmel R.C. Church and together they raised three loving children, Donald (Judy) Matney of Silver Creek, Frank Matney of Dunkirk, NY, and Janice ( Robert) Manning of Fredonia, NY, seven beloved grandchildren , Robert ( Brooke) Manning, Kelly (Brad) Horton, William ( Wendy) Manning , Ian (Melissa) Matney, Brian ( Jessica ) Manning, Eric and Jenna Matney, also seventeen great grandchildren.
Besides her parents , she was preceded in death by her husband of 54years,William Matney, two brothers, Anthony and Salvatore Porpiglia and a sister Jeanette Veklotz.

Josephine’s eyes sparkled when she talked of the programs and activities she shared everyday with a multi-age classroom at Silver Creek Central School. A member of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP).She volunteered for many years at the elementary school. As a young child she dreamed of one day being a teacher.
Josephine was a lifelong member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel R.C. Church. She served as a eucharistic minister and enjoyed playing bingo on Sunday’s. She baked pies, cookies, and special holiday treats to be shared at family gatherings. She liked to tend to her flowers and vegetables in her garden during the warmer weather. In her spare time she did needle work , made ornaments for the family Christmas tree and enjoyed reading. Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren.
She married William Matney on February 11,1950 at Our Lady Of Mt. Carmel R.C. Church and together they raised three loving children, Donald (Judy) Matney of Silver Creek, Frank Matney of Dunkirk, NY, and Janice ( Robert) Manning of Fredonia, NY, seven beloved grandchildren , Robert ( Brooke) Manning, Kelly (Brad) Horton, William ( Wendy) Manning , Ian (Melissa) Matney, Brian ( Jessica ) Manning, Eric and Jenna Matney, also seventeen great grandchildren.
Besides her parents , she was preceded in death by her husband of 54years,William Matney, two brothers, Anthony and Salvatore Porpiglia and a sister Jeanette Veklotz.

Josephine R. Matney, 95 , of Silver Creek, NY, died Saturday evening, Oct. 15,2016 at the Chautauqua County Nursing and Rehab Center in Dunkirk, NY.
She was born on October 31, 1920 in Silver Creek, NY, the daughter of the late Frank and Josephine (Ortolano) Porpiglia.
Josephine grew up and attended school in Silver Creek. Everyone in her family worked hard. They labored together on the farms throughout the area and later she took a variety of jobs. She worked at the ammunitions plant, Silver Creek Precision. She also worked at Van Raalte, Patton Electric and Lodico’s Park Pharmacy. She always worked, she couldn’t sit still.
Her love of children was apparent in her words and actions.
