Obituary of Raymond F. Weber

On Friday, Jan. 17, 2014, Raymond F. "Sam" Weber, a World War II veteran died at 105. Weber was honored in a ceremony in December in celebration of his birthday. The event was conducted by the Dunkirk Joint Veterans Council at St. Columban's on the Lake Retirement Home. He had worked as a butcher for A&P Grocery Store in Buffalo. "What a wonderful life you must have lived," said council Chaplain Sandra Tapasto at the ceremony. "You have enjoyed 38,325 glorious sunrises, and enjoyed the same number of beautiful sunsets," she continued. "You have had an equal number of starlit skies to gaze at in wonder." Weber was born Dec. 6, 1908 and joined the New York National Guard in 1928. After hearing about his brother-in-law being shot down in Germany, Weber joined the U.S. Armed Forces in 1944. He was 36. Dunkirk Memorial Post 62 Commander Butch Piglowski honored Weber with a life membership for WWII vets in Dunkirk. "For the Greatest Generation," Piglowski said.
