Obituary of Edward L. Newman

Edward “Ed” Louis Newman, 86, went to be with his maker on Wednesday July 26, 2023 at the Chautauqua Rehab Center with his family by his side.  Ed was born on August 1, 1936 at the Rhinehart Hospital in Silver Creek, NY, the son of Selma (Ahlers) and Paul Fredrick Newman.  

On May 7, 1960, Ed married the love of his life Dolores “Lorrie” Chesbro at the Zion Lutheran Church in Silver Creek and together they raised four children.

Survivors include his devoted and loving wife of 63 years, Dolores “Lorrie” (Chesbro) Newman, four children, Brenda Hennessey of Fredonia, NY, Edward (Pegeen) Newman of Bethel, CT., David (Carrie) Newman of Sunset Bay, NY and Christina (David) Swaenepoel of Lake View, NY.  Ed is further survived by eight grandchildren, Sarah (Ron) Krzal, David (Brittany) Hennessey, Paige, Zachary and Luke Newman, Katelyn, Connor and Aubrie Swaenepoel. He was blessed with three great grandchildren, Alexa and Carter Hennessey and Matthew Krzal.

Besides his parents, Ed was predeceased by his brothers Harold and Don and his son-in-law Scott Hennessey.

Ed was a graduate of Silver Creek High School’s Class of 1954 and continued his education at Alfred Agricultural College where he received his Associate Degree.  Following college, Ed worked for several local farms before being employed by the New York State Department of Transportation.  In 1965 he joined the staff at Dunkirk Ice Cream, retiring in 1998 as the Maintenance Manager. Ed proudly served his county for 19 years as a member of the New York State National Guard, rising to the rank of Captain and was the Commanding Officer of the armored unit located in Dunkirk, NY.

A lifelong resident of Silver Creek, Ed, along with Lorrie volunteered their time to many local organizations. Ed was past president of the Silver Creek Senior Citizens, Silver Creek Hanover Garden Club and the Glenwood Cemetery Association. He served as Mayor and Trustee for the Village of Silver Creek.  Ed was active in youth programs, serving president of the local Babe Ruth League and as a Cub Scout leader. He served on the Grape Festival Committee and on the board of The Friends of The Anderson-Lee Library. He volunteered at the former Lakeshore Hospital, Chautauqua Hospice and was active with Habitat for Humanity. He was a past president and a current member of Kiwanis. He was a member of American Legion Post 953 of Forestville.  Ed was also a Deacon and Elder in the First United Presbyterian Church of Silver Creek.

Ed felt very blessed to have a wonderful family and thoroughly enjoyed spending time with them.  He especially loved watching both his grandchildren and great grandchildren 

at school musicals and concerts. He also loved to work in his garden and being with his pets.

Relatives and friends may call at the First United Presbyterian Church, 35 Park Place Silver Creek NY on Tuesday August 1, 2023 from 10:00AM to11:00AM, where services will immediately follow at 11:00AM.

In lieu for flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the The First United Presbyterian Church of Silver Creek or to Silver Creek Emergency Squad.
