Obituary of Gilbert W. Seegert

Obituary Gilbert W. “Gib” Seegert, 73, of Silver Creek, NY passed away unexpectedly on Saturday evening December 5, 2020 at his home with his loving family at his side. Gib was born on March 18, 1947 in Silver Creek, the son of the late Frederick and Phyllis (Czajkowski) Seegert. On June 13, 1970 he married his high school sweetheart, Elizabeth S. Mangano and together they raised two beautiful daughters. Gib is survived by his wife of 50 years, Elizabeth Seegert; two daughters, Kristin (Anthony) Dolce of Orchard Park, NY and Megan Seegert of Atlanta, GA; four cherished grandchildren, Ava, Sophia, Nicholas and Gianna Seegert; a brother, Fritz (Sue) Seegert Jr. of Silver Creek; a sister, Marie (Michael) Keane of Lancaster, NY; his therapy cat “Buster”; also survived by several nieces and nephews. Gib graduated from Silver Creek High School in 1966. He enlisted in U.S. Marines during the Vietnam War doing combat duty from March 1968 to April 1969. He worked for NYSTA as a heavy equipment operator, retired after 34 years of service, he also was the Employee Assistance Program Coordinator. Throughout all this Gib attended night school for 10 years earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in “Human Services” from Medaille College in Buffalo, NY. He went onto receive certification from Erie Community College in Alcohol- Substance Abuse and was awarded a scholarship to Rutgers University in Substance Abuse Studies. He served as an outpatient-inpatient substance abuse counselor at the former Gowanda Hospital, also in Dunkirk, Cassadaga and Derby outpatient clinics. He counseled at the Mental Health Unit for Lakeshore Hospital for five years. Gib was a kind compassionate man who tried to help people with substance abuse addictions, having faced his own head on and overcoming them. Gib was passionate about golf, he enjoyed playing recreationally and competitively. He was a former “Club Champion “at Gowanda Country Club. Gib’s memberships included the Samuel Cimino VFW Post 6472 in Silver Creek, where he was a life member, Disabled American Veterans, Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 459, the Tri-County Country Club, he served on the Board of Directors and the Gowanda Country Club. He will be dearly missed by his family and many great friends. As per Gib’s wishes visitation and services will be private. If so desired memorial contributions in Gib’s honor may be made to the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 459, 8 Queen Diana Lane Queensbury Lane Queensbury, NY 12804 or Hospice Chautauqua County, 20 W.
